Anything like TouchOSC for OSX?

Postby Raketemensch » Wed Jul 21, 2010 1:04 pm

I'm wondering if anyone has stumbled onto a tool like TouchOSC for OSx, or even for Windows....

It takes like 30 seconds to add a toggle/button/slider, map it via an OSC namespace, and sync it to my phone. I've got a great GUI set up for managing my setup, but it's on a tiny little screen that I don't want to use live. It seems like there's got to be something just as simple for a full-on computer, no?

I don't know Flash, so flosc is out. I've dug around for 3-4 hours on using Max, but haven't gotten very far.

Advice? URLs? Abuse?

I'm working on it now:

Run Time Editor

The Windows version is obviously ready, and I do have a Linux version ready, but I have not had the time to try any method to run Linux binaries on MacOSX (or Windows executables for that matter). The Java .jar file actually runs fine on MacOSX, but I use an obfuscator that makes it OS specific (sorry)...for now anyway! ;-)

I just implemented OSC and Midi control so I can remotely control Bidule and replace my Receptor, and it seems to work well. I put in a request to Seb for some OSC features that would make the communication a bit more versatile IMO.

Well, if you'd like any help with it, I build and deploy Java code for a living. I'm a platform-agnostic, professional build monkey, pretty much.

I live in Ant, Ivy, etc.

I appreciate that.

Two things I wish I could do:

1) Hire some help

- or -

2) Open source the code

If I didn't have to wrap the Java code in an obfuscator you would have your solution now...my apologies. As it is, I have the executable on a perpetual demo so people can use it in some form without paying. I will take a look at getting it to run in some fashion on OSX by using something like:

Linux apps on OSX

I feel guilty enjoying this all by myself! :-)

I have a Linux build ready for download:

RTE3 Linux

I started to follow the steps in the link posted above to get this installed on OSX, but I need to download a more recent version of XCode from Apple. Apparently "Fink" needs the Apple gcc compiler and X11 for this to work. The XCode download is over 1 gigabyte, so I won't know exactly what the results are until later tonight...

My apologies...it is not going to work this way. Fink requires the sources to build (I should have realized that!).

I will keep working on a solution.

I'm confused.... Is your obfuscation happening within the jar, or is it a c++ wrapper?

I've done a couple of projects where we obfuscated the code within the jar file, which kept it multi-platform. We ran it on Windows, Macs, Linux, Solaris, etc.

Exactly...I am using JET (Excelsior).

I am taking another look at ProGuard.

The last time I tried any obfuscation technique, I could reverse engineer a large enough part of the code (using any one of the free de-compilers) that would make the work discernible.

People have also combined ProGuard with Jarg and had good results, but I can't say I've traveled that particular road.

Sorry, but I am not satisfied with the java obfuscation techniques right now...

However, I did add OSC functionality to the RTE2 (the predecessor to the RTE3) which is a universal binary on OSX. You may like this better because it also has the iPhone/iPod web application stuff too:

RTE2 for OSX

There is no installation, just drag the folder anywhere. There is a password to get into the Editor (1234), and you do need to authorize the demo every 30 days.

Have fun!

I probably should mention that you are looking for the "OSC_Control_Example.ctl" project in the "Examples" folder...or from the "Examples" project (available form the "Help" menu) there is a button that will load it directly for you (along with a few other example projects you might like).

To authorize, type the word "Demo" into the "IP Address" field and press "Authorize". The instructions are in the "Read Me".

Cheers!
