SOLVED ** OSX: Audio File Recorder creates files with malformed header?

Postby boonier » Sat Oct 14, 2017 3:14 am

Not sure if this was always the case, but whenever I create a 16/24/32 bit file, and start/stopping, the file is neither preview-able or shows any header info in OSX Finder like bit depth or sample rate.

OSX 10.10.5

I don't recall this being a problem?

Its not easy to figure out from your explanation if the file you are previewing is still opened by bidule.
OSX might want the file properly closed to figure out the header info. We havent changed anything on our end in years.

That could be the problem , so just pressing stop doesn't release the file and finish writing the file header? Loading the file in an editor works fine

Certainly is strange. I've experienced this before in SuperCollider, when the close method on the file hadn't been called, but that was user-error.

I assume that stopping the record should properly close the file and let Finder access the header properly?

Maybe its something in the Finder's open/close monitoring logic that eludes me otherwise.

SOLVED: The problem was WAVFORMATEXTENSIBLE was on (adaptive or always). Switching to off resolved my problem.

Not sure how this setting came to be changed - it was most probably me.

Yeah, that's what I seem to remember mine being, which is why I'm baffled.

Do you have an issue with previewing files in 24bit/32bit?

I'm wondering if it's something to do with the latest builds and latest versions of macOS

Speaking of which, I'm going to have to take the plunge with High Sierra 10.13 (not 10.12 annoyingly) as other parts of my workflow (job work mainly)
are becoming increasingly unsupported.

Is Bidule running ok in 10.13 @Seb/@David?

So many 3rd plugins crash and the whole thing feels pretty unsafe to us at the moment.
We've fixed a few issues in Bidule/plugins, but we haven't tried everything.
