SDK and GPL 2 code

Postby dts350z » Fri Apr 01, 2011 11:47 am

Can plugin source code, combined with source code licensed by GPL 2 (or later), be distributed as "freeware"?

The point being not to viloate the terms of the GPL 2 (or later) license.

Thanks

I do not wish to put the SDK under the GPL so the answer would have to be no.

How about Apache license 2.0?

http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.html

It looks to me like with that one you can distribute in "object form" (non source) and only have to include the license with what you distribute.

My main concerns are:
- I'm really not interested/ready at this point to make the SDK public (in the anybody can get it directly/anywhere without asking sense)
- We currently are not interested in having people selling SDK-made plugins (the apache license allows this)

So I really don't know what can be done...

Well FYI what I was hoping to do (not for sale) was make a plugin that could stream, 2, 4, 6, or 8 channels of audio and be UPnP compatible.

Yes there are streaming VSTs, but they are either stereo only, proprietary protocols, or just plain don't work without glitching.

Besides the stereo to surround community (streaming from Plogue to a PS3 or other UPnP surround player), I figured it might be popular in "performance space" applications.

I wasn't implying you wanted to sell it, the apache license would let someone take what you did+the SDK, repackage it and sell it.
