A quick skin and some questions regarding skinning & ass

Postby polyfonken » Thu Oct 29, 2009 3:47 am

Hiyall!

I spent a few hours and made a (mostly) gray skin color change for chipsounds. It still has some rough edges and is probably disagreeable to at least as many people as the original but if someone wants it, it can be found at:

http://www.polyfonken.com/ChipSkin/

However, the GUI.zip contains the whole GUI folder (so remember to backup) which also includes a lot of stuff not used in Chipsounds and obviously when the fine people of Plogue update chipsounds, copying this over the existing GUI folder would in fact hide the new functionalities.

I was wondering (a) would it be better to include only the changed assets in skin zips instead of the whole folder or (b) is chipsounds going to support multiple changeable skins in the future and (c) what is plogues stance on altering and sharing a part of their work anyway?

A) since skins can very well have all their XMLs modified, better to copy even what is not modified. However we do sometimes fix bugs in displays (especially for parameter ranges - see the official patch thread)... So im not 100% sure here.

B) we would love to, but we are currently scratching our heads on the best way to make that dynamic and easy.

C) as long as its respectful and not in bad taste, hack away.. we left everything open for a reason.

ok ok here its back

http://www.polyfonken.com/ChipSkin/

There is also a mod on it that's smaller made by bleo:
http://dummydrome.com/skinnyGUI.zip
NOTE: you need to change the osc definition in the chipsounds.bank.xml
from:
vendor_specific=width:400|height:150|param_offset:1100
to:
vendor_specific=width:400|height:75|param_offset:1100

Note on skins, you dont have to replace the shipped GUI folder, you can have all ui folders side by side and only change the GUI in use in the AriaSetup.xml file:
<Property name="guiPath" value="GUI/gui.xml" />
to
<Property name="guiPath" value="skinnyGUI/gui.xml" />
or whatnot

For what it is worth I have had good luck making a second "Skins" Folder, and simply editing the Ariasetup.xml file to point to the skin I have nested in that folder. This way I have the skins side by side in a directory relevant to containing only skins.

Yes that is usually what i do, short of having a live mechanism to change the skins.
Mind you lots of skin changes will happen in next release which im working hard over. no release date yet.

Although it's a full blown app rather than a VSTi, maybe have a look at the Jeskola Buzz for the method they use for using dynamic skins (the sourcecode for the gui is here - http://svn.jeskola.net/buzzgui/ ). Reason being they are also XML based (well XAML to be precise) and you can change the look from this (default skin) -

to this (this is my own 'homemade' skin for it) from just XML manipulation, and the skins are fully selectable -

Thanks for pointing this.
Of course being totally different in design (though xml based), I would need to implement my own solution to this problem.
Cheers
