Preset converter

Postby goonzy » Sat Oct 17, 2009 4:23 am

Hi Plogue Team

1st thank you for Chipsound... It's the VSTi I've been waiting for years.

I was wondering... would there be a way to make an instrument converter (for trackers instruments like Rockmonitor on 64, or MaxYMizer on ST) to build a nice preset library as I've got a bunch of them :)

Thanks!

While i dont have a direct instrument converter for them directly we do have lots of very hackey command line apps that do stuff of the likes.

The way I approach things it to make an independent register write dump from these programs:

So whatever the actual tracker or player, OR CPU. you get the information
that the chip would receive in a certain computer/console.

So once you have a VGMX file, i have converters that transform that into
"chipsounds MIDI" which can then be edited in a sequencer, and stripped in order to listen/analyse the effect required.

Its a very tedious process. and cant be made automatic for sure.
But it surely is fun to listen to SID/Pokey/whatever tracks in chipsounds :)
(Ill post a few soon.)

I could spend a lifetime converting effects and sounds from games just to understand and to be amazed at what these guys did.

That's a start...

There might be a way to convert .MYI (maxymizer's instrument presets) with the help of his author.

For C64, there could be goat tracker or cybertracker instrument format which could be documented.

(and raster music tracker for Pokey)..; I hope I have time/energy/motivation to look into those instrument formats and ee if there could be an easy way to make a conversion script :)

Im sure many of those formats really makes sense to the tracker engine, and how it subsequently transform the preset data into a very specific series of chip commands, and i dont think we would get a converter without taking half the code of maxYMizer with it.

That why what i suggest is cleaner.
Load an instrument in an emu and play each in turn on middle C, and dump the register writes to file.

This way you get not only YM, but anything, game special effects, the lot.
