Cutoff/Decay, EMU, Mac, Yamaha

Postby mcleanab » Sun Feb 19, 2017 3:34 pm

Hey all!

Just grabbed up Sforzando to play/record my lovely EMU sounds (Digital Sound Factory) using Reaper as my DAW, a Mac Mini, and an old lovely Yamaha KX25 to trigger everything... I'm mainly a guitarist, so this is all a bit new to me...

Everything sounds lovely and is loading up just fine either in stand alone or in the DAW... my question is this: how do I control the cutoff rate/decay of certain sounds? Sounds like "Breather" from the EMU Proteus 2000 just hangs and suspends forever and I can't find how to cutoff the trails using either my Yamaha or in Sforzando? I can control the pan, volume, and effects, but not the cutoff...

Any help for a first time user? On the old hardware modules, it was a simple turn of a knob... can't find the digital equivalent...

I'm sure it's right under my nose...

Thanks in advance!

Hi Adam,

I may be mistaken, but the sfz versions from DSF (labeled for Dimension IIRC) are simply the mapped samples from the E-MU hardware.
The filter/envelope/FX being handled by the ".prog " files (the Dimension preset files).

You could very well edit the sfz files adding MIDI CC control over the filter and envelope, but it could take forever tweaking the values to get the behavior you know from the old hardware.

Hi Eric!

Thanks for the response!

Yeah, they are ARIA converted (through sforzando) .sfz files.

I was just hoping that there was a simple 'decay rate' knob somewhere in the software to help control certain sounds... the little piano pedals in the bottom right work on sounds that cut off immediately when no longer depressing a key, but with the ones that linger, there's nothing...

Do you mean those were the soundfont (sf2) versions to begin with?

Soundfont I think...

ARIA converted them for sforzando when I was trying to figure it all out!

So, no simple solution of a software 'knob' to control the decay time?

The simplest solution would be to open every sfz file in a text editor and add (or replace) something like the following in the appropriate section(s):

ampeg_decay=0
ampeg_decay_oncc75=5

That way, a new control would show up on the interface and you can assign a knob on your controller to MIDI CC75 so it would control the decay time between 0 and 5 seconds.

You'd probably need a sustain level control as well, since it may be set at 100% by default, the decay wouldn't have any effect at all.
But since I don't know how your files are laid out exactly, it's hard to tell for sure.

Thanks again... but the text editor doesn't seem to work with the files... :(

Usually, the simplest works best: Notepad, TextEdit... you just have to manually save them as *.sfz
